Redirects for discussion (RfD) is the place where potentially problematic redirects are discussed. Items usually stay listed for a week or so, after which they are deleted, kept, or retargeted.

  • If you want to replace an unprotected redirect with an article, do not list it here. Turning redirects into articles is wholly encouraged. Be bold!
  • If you want to move a page but a redirect is in the way, do not list it here. For non-controversial cases, place a technical request; if a discussion is required, then start a requested move.
  • If you think a redirect points to the wrong target article, this is a good place to discuss the proper target.
  • Redirects should not be deleted just because they have no incoming links. Please do not use this as the only reason to delete a redirect. However, redirects that do have incoming links are sometimes deleted, so that is not a sufficient condition for keeping. (See § When should we delete a redirect? for more information.)

Please do not unilaterally rename or change the target of a redirect while it is under discussion. This adds unnecessary complication to the discussion for participants and closers.

Before listing a redirect for discussion

[edit]

Please be aware of these general policies, which apply here as elsewhere:

The guiding principles of RfD

[edit]
  • The purpose of a good redirect is to eliminate the possibility that readers will find themselves staring blankly at "Search results 1–10 out of 378" instead of the article they were looking for. If someone could plausibly enter the redirect's name when searching for the target article, it's a good redirect.
  • Redirects are cheap. They take up little storage space and use very little bandwidth. It doesn't really hurt things if there are a few of them scattered around. On the flip side, deleting redirects is also cheap because recording the deletion takes up little storage space and uses very little bandwidth. There is no harm in deleting problematic redirects.
  • If a good-faith RfD nomination proposes to delete a redirect and has no discussion after at least 7 days, the default result is delete.
  • Redirects nominated in contravention of Wikipedia:Redirect will be speedily kept.
  • RfD can also serve as a central discussion forum for debates about which page a redirect should target. In cases where retargeting the redirect could be considered controversial, it is advisable to leave a notice on the talk page of the redirect's current target page or the proposed target page to refer readers to the redirect's nomination to allow input and help form consensus for the redirect's target.
  • Requests for deletion of redirects from one page's talk page to another's do not need to be listed here. Anyone can remove the redirect by blanking the page. The G6 criterion for speedy deletion may be appropriate.
  • In discussions, always ask yourself whether or not a redirect would be helpful to the reader.

When should we delete a redirect?

[edit]

The major reasons why deletion of redirects is harmful are:

  • a redirect may contain non-trivial edit history;
  • if a redirect is reasonably old (or is the result of moving a page that has been there for quite some time), then it is possible that its deletion will break incoming links (such links coming from older revisions of Wikipedia pages, from edit summaries, from other Wikimedia projects or from elsewhere on the internet, do not show up in "What links here").

Therefore consider the deletion only of either harmful redirects or of recent ones.

Reasons for deleting

[edit]

You might want to delete a redirect if one or more of the following conditions is met (but note also the exceptions listed below this list):

  1. The redirect page makes it unreasonably difficult for users to locate similarly named articles via the search engine. For example, if the user searches for "New Articles", and is redirected to a disambiguation page for "Articles", it would take much longer to get to the newly added articles on Wikipedia.
  2. The redirect might cause confusion. For example, if "Adam B. Smith" was redirected to "Andrew B. Smith", because Andrew was accidentally called Adam in one source, this could cause confusion with the article on Adam Smith, so the redirect should be deleted.
  3. The redirect is offensive or abusive, such as redirecting "Joe Bloggs is a Loser" to "Joe Bloggs" (unless "Joe Bloggs is a Loser" is legitimately discussed in the article), or "Joe Bloggs" to "Loser". (Speedy deletion criterion G10 and G3 may apply.) See also § Neutrality of redirects.
  4. The redirect constitutes self-promotion or spam. (Speedy deletion criterion G11 may apply.)
  5. The redirect makes no sense, such as redirecting "Apple" to "Orange". (Speedy deletion criterion G1 may apply.)
  6. It is a cross-namespace redirect out of article space, such as one pointing into the User or Wikipedia namespace. The major exception to this rule are the pseudo-namespace shortcut redirects, which technically are in the main article space. Some long-standing cross-namespace redirects are also kept because of their long-standing history and potential usefulness. "MOS:" redirects, for example, were an exception to this rule until they became their own namespace in 2024. (Note also the existence of namespace aliases such as WP:. Speedy deletion criterion R2 may apply if the target namespace is something other than Category:, Template:, Wikipedia:, Help:, or Portal:.)
  7. If the redirect is broken, meaning it redirects to an article that does not exist, it can be immediately deleted under speedy deletion criterion G8. You should check that there is not an alternative place it could be appropriately redirected to first and that it has not become broken through vandalism.
  8. If the redirect is a novel or very obscure synonym for an article name that is not mentioned in the target, it is unlikely to be useful. In particular, redirects in a language other than English to a page whose subject is unrelated to that language (or a culture that speaks that language) should generally not be created. (Implausible typos or misnomers are candidates for speedy deletion criterion R3, if recently created.)
  9. If the target article needs to be moved to the redirect title, but the redirect has been edited before and has a history of its own, then the title needs to be freed up to make way for the move. If the move is uncontroversial, tag the redirect for G6 speedy deletion, or alternatively (with the suppressredirect user right; available to page movers and admins), perform a round-robin move. If not, take the article to Requested moves.
  10. If the redirect could plausibly be expanded into an article, and the target article contains virtually no information on the subject.

Reasons for not deleting

[edit]

However, avoid deleting such redirects if:

  1. They have a potentially useful page history, or an edit history that should be kept to comply with the licensing requirements for a merge (see Wikipedia:Merge and delete). On the other hand, if the redirect was created by renaming a page with that name, and the page history just mentions the renaming, and for one of the reasons above you want to delete the page, copy the page history to the Talk page of the article it redirects to. The act of renaming is useful page history, and even more so if there has been discussion on the page name.
  2. They would aid accidental linking and make the creation of duplicate articles less likely, whether by redirecting a plural to a singular, by redirecting a frequent misspelling to a correct spelling, by redirecting a misnomer to a correct term, by redirecting to a synonym, etc. In other words, redirects with no incoming links are not candidates for deletion on those grounds because they are of benefit to the browsing user. Some extra vigilance by editors will be required to minimize the occurrence of those frequent misspellings in article text because the linkified misspellings will not appear as broken links; consider tagging the redirect with the R from misspelling template to assist editors in monitoring these misspellings.
  3. They aid searches on certain terms. For example, users who might see the "Keystone State" mentioned somewhere but do not know what that refers to will be able to find out at the Pennsylvania (target) article.
  4. Deleting redirects runs the risk of breaking incoming or internal links. For example, redirects resulting from page moves should not normally be deleted without good reason. Links that have existed for a significant length of time, including CamelCase links (e.g. WolVes) and old subpage links, should be left alone in case there are any existing links on external pages pointing to them. See also Wikipedia:Link rot § Link rot on non-Wikimedia sites.
  5. Someone finds them useful. Hint: If someone says they find a redirect useful, they probably do. You might not find it useful—this is not because the other person is being untruthful, but because you browse Wikipedia in different ways. Evidence of usage can be gauged by using the wikishark or pageviews tool on the redirect to see the number of views it gets.
  6. The redirect is to a closely related word form, such as a plural form to a singular form.

Neutrality of redirects

[edit]

Just as article titles using non-neutral language are permitted in some circumstances, so are such redirects. Because redirects are less visible to readers, more latitude is allowed in their names, therefore perceived lack of neutrality in redirect names is not a sufficient reason for their deletion. In most cases, non-neutral but verifiable redirects should point to neutrally titled articles about the subject of the term. Non-neutral redirects may be tagged with R from non-neutral name.

Non-neutral redirects are commonly created for three reasons:

  1. Articles that are created using non-neutral titles are routinely moved to a new neutral title, which leaves behind the old non-neutral title as a working redirect (e.g. ClimategateClimatic Research Unit email controversy).
  2. Articles created as POV forks may be deleted and replaced by a redirect pointing towards the article from which the fork originated (e.g. Barack Obama Muslim rumor → deleted and now redirected to Barack Obama religion conspiracy theories).
  3. The subject matter of articles may be represented by some sources outside Wikipedia in non-neutral terms. Such terms are generally avoided in Wikipedia article titles, per the words to avoid guidelines and the general neutral point of view policy. For instance the non-neutral expression "Attorneygate" is used to redirect to the neutrally titled Dismissal of U.S. attorneys controversy. The article in question has never used that title, but the redirect was created to provide an alternative means of reaching it because a number of press reports use the term.

The exceptions to this rule would be redirects that are not established terms and are unlikely to be useful, and therefore may be nominated for deletion, perhaps under deletion reason #3. However, if a redirect represents an established term that is used in multiple mainstream reliable sources, it should be kept even if non-neutral, as it will facilitate searches on such terms. Please keep in mind that RfD is not the place to resolve most editorial disputes.

Closing notes

[edit]
Details at Administrator instructions for RfD

Nominations should remain open, per policy, about a week before they are closed, unless they meet the general criteria for speedy deletion, the criteria for speedy deletion of a redirect, or are not valid redirect discussion requests (e.g. are actually move requests).

How to list a redirect for discussion

[edit]
STEP I.
Tag the redirect(s).

  Enter at the very end of the page.

  • Please do not mark the edit as minor (m).
  • Please include in the edit summary the phrase:
    Nominated for RfD: see Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion.
  • Save the page ("Publish changes").
  • If you are unable to edit the redirect page because of protection, this step can be omitted, and after step 2 is completed, a request to add the RFD template can be put on the redirect's talk page.
  • If the redirect you are nominating is in template namespace, consider adding |showontransclusion=1 to the RfD tag so that people using the template redirect are aware of the nomination.
  • If you are nominating multiple redirects as a group, repeat all the above steps for each redirect being nominated.
STEP II.
List the entry on RfD.

 Click here to edit the section of RfD for today's entries.

  • Enter this text below the date heading:
~~~~
  • For this template:
    • Put the redirect's name in place of RedirectName, put the target article's name in place of TargetArticle, and include a reason after text=.
    • Note that, for this step, the "target article" is the current target of the redirect (if you have a suggestion for a better target, include this in the text that you insert after text=).
  • Please use an edit summary such as:
    Nominating RedirectName
    (replacing RedirectName with the name of the redirect you are nominating).
  • To list multiple related redirects for discussion, use the following syntax. Repeat line 2 for N number of redirects:
~~~~
  • If the redirect has had previous RfDs, you can add previous RfD without brackets directly after the rfd2 template.
  • If appropriate, inform members of the most relevant WikiProjects through one or more "deletion sorting lists". Then add a template to the nomination, to insert a note that this has been done.
STEP III.
Notify users.

  It is generally considered good practice to notify the creator and main contributors of the redirect(s) that you nominate.

To find the main contributors, look in the page history of the respective redirect(s). For convenience, the template

~~~~
may be placed on the creator/main contributors' user talk page to provide notice of the discussion. Please replace RedirectName with the name of the respective creator/main contributors' redirect and use an edit summary such as:
Notice of redirect discussion at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion
Notices about the RfD discussion may also be left on relevant talk pages.
  • Please consider using What links here to locate other redirects that may be related to the one you are nominating. After going to the redirect target page and selecting "What links here" in the toolbox on the left side of your computer screen, select both "Hide transclusions" and "Hide links" filters to display the redirects to the redirect target page.
Freak off
[edit]
I just removed an unsourced mention of this phrase at target. Even if a source were added, they're not the same thing: Per [1], there are allegations of sexual exploitation at the White Parties, but that's distinct from the alleged freak-offs in hotel rooms. If there's a place this should target, it's Sean Combs sexual misconduct allegations, but currently "Freak-off" only appears in citations there. If mentioned in the body of that article, I'd support a retarget. Else, delete. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (they|xe|🤷) 03:03, 15 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This does seem to be genuinely used as a term to refer to the Diddy Parties, as is reported by reliable sources with respect to the lawsuit. So it's used, and it seems to be a reasonable search term for something related to this. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 06:27, 18 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Studio Hamburg
[edit]
Studio Hamburg is an existing production company in Germany. See its German language article at de:Studio Hamburg. 2014–15 Vitória de Guimarães B season
[edit]
As far as the history of this article shows, it cites no sources for a rather incomplete piece of content. Furthermore, it's a page with no relevance whatsoever, so there's no point in continuing these redirects in the Wikipedia project. We're talking about a page that contains 8/9 redirects without any sense of existence (but they still comment that redirects are cheap!). So let's add more... what a joke of a comment). 44 Gabriel (talk) 23:40, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep: 2017–18 since it's a harmless R with history. Not so sure about the others. I went ahead and bundled these 4 nominations since each rationale was identical, and they all share the same target. CycloneYoris talk! 00:25, 30 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Kvng: Your vote was keep, meaning you wanted both redirects to keep targeting Noise reduction even without the nomination concern of the target having no mention. But you also talked about improving Pumping (audio). How is it related to the redirect discussion? Jay 💬 08:04, 23 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I suggested Pumping (audio) could be improved to discuss pumping for noise reduction systems and then I neglected to suggest that both Pumping (noise reduction) and Breathing (noise reduction) could then redirect there. An alternative is to improve Noise reduction to mention pumping. My suggestions for improvements are based on my professional expertise in this area. I'm not immediately able to find sources that could support these suggested improvements. This area is underdeveloped but that doesn't mean we should delete redirects to likely search topics, WP:DEMOLISH. ~Kvng (talk) 15:21, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Just Dance 6
[edit]
All should be deleted. They seem to be extrapolations of Just Dance 5, which was the working title for (and thus a valid redirect to) Just Dance 2014. However, none of these other games were ever known by these names, and later ones (such as Just Dance 14, 15, and 16) may be confused for earlier entries (Just Dance 2014, 2015, and 2016). Pentapotamian people
[edit]
Seems unlikely someone would use an ancient greek derived name for a group of people, especially when said group did not have an independent identity at that time. DoctorWhoFan91 (talk) 16:00, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Pentapotamia redirects to Punjab. I added those redirects by analogy. I'm also not fully sure if that term is actually "Ancient Greek", rather than a modern calque. Pescavelho (talk) 16:21, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sources in Punjab do mention that the ancient Greeks called it that. Pentapotamia as a redirect is fine, as it refers to the region. Punjabi as an actual independent identity evolved more than a millennia after that. So these redirects do not make sense. DoctorWhoFan91 (talk) 16:28, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The original Lionsgate was renamed as "Starz Entertainment Corp." as of November 2024. Round 6
[edit]
Generic title, round 6 can refer to anything, not only its original title DoctorWhoFan91 (talk) 07:46, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: Bundled both nominations that share the same target and rationale. CycloneYoris talk! 10:04, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • I sorely agree that "round 6/six" is a very bland and generic expression – yet it remains both as the original title and the chosen localized title in some countries. Un Lucas Pestana (talk) 12:10, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep - it's the original title of the show, and is still the current title of the show in some countries (Canada and Brazil, according to the article). Mentioned at the target. Unless we have another article that needs the "Round Six" title then there's no reason to remove this. RachelTensions (talk) 16:45, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete "Round 6", but keep "Round Six". With "Six" spelled out and capitalized, we have something that was an original (and used elsewhere) title for the show, mentioned at the target. It's ambiguous with the generic phrase, but being a title gives it some priority. However, that priority disappears when entered incorrectly, and think having a redirect with the number in place gets in the way of normal searching. 35.139.154.158 (talk) 17:16, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This may require an expert on the region, which I am not. Regardless, the namespace is not mentioned in the targeted section nor the entire article about administrative units of Pakistan. Complex math
[edit]
Complex numbers aren't the only complex part of math though? For one, several people have lamented (publicly and privately) about how stuff like calculus and algebra are complex as well. For second, what's considered complex can be different from person to person (for example, a 6-year-old would think something like "8/4" is the hardest question ever made whereas a recreational mathematician could probably do it easily), so complex numbers might not actually be that complex to certain people. User:Someone-123-321 (I contribute, Talk page so SineBot will shut up) 09:18, 21 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. The phrase is inherently ambiguous, and readers have better to search separately its components complex and math. — Preceding unsigned comment added by D.Lazard (talkcontribs)
  • Delete per D.Lazard. One aspect of the problem is that "complex" has a technical meaning in math (referring to the complex numbers) and a colloquial meaning in general (something like complicated or difficult). Mgnbar (talk) 13:00, 21 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment – I've bundled in Complex mathematics. J947edits 22:52, 21 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak keep: this certainly is very ambiguous between the two meanings. However, for one meaning (complex numbers) we have a good target and for the other meaning (complicated in general) we don't. Therefore I'm leaning towards this redirect being ok. J947edits 22:52, 21 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Additionally, unlike many areas of mathematics like calculus, geometry, etc., the study of complex numbers doesn't really have a better name as far as I know. Whilst perhaps incorrect (and therefore a R from incorrect name), "complex mathematics" is a decent guess at what it might be called. J947edits 00:35, 28 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep, obviously. Sure, you could say there's ambiguity between "complex math" and "math that's complex" in the same way that if you wanted to you could assert there's some ambiguity between Big apple and an apple that's big. There's no article for the general concept of "math that's complicated", and even if there were, Complex number would still be the correct target for "complex math". I'd be fine with a hatnote if anyone genuinely feels there's some confusion. BugGhost 🦗👻 00:21, 22 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Nobody uses the phrase "complex mathematics" for this. When I typed "complex mathematics" into a Google scholar search, not a single result from the first 50 meant complex in the sense of complex numbers. Most of them were about "complex mathematics" tasks in education, meaning difficult, complicated, or advanced. –jacobolus (t) 04:19, 22 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    It's a redirect, not an article title - it doesn't need to be the exact phrase scholars use. This article covers the accepted meaning of "complex" used in mathematics, and so the redirect is correct. We also don't (and probably shouldn't) have an article on the subjective concept of "difficult mathematics". BugGhost 🦗👻 08:21, 23 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    There are lots of accepted meanings of "complex" in mathematics; see below. 35.139.154.158 (talk) 03:04, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete, not a phrase which is meaningful or widely used as a unit. Curious readers should be looking up "complex" in Wiktionary and "mathematics" here, or else going to complex analysis or complex number. These titles have no inbound wikilinks from article namespace, another indication that they aren't very useful. –jacobolus (t) 04:21, 22 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    To clarify, you're suggesting that if someone knows that there's a concept in mathematics using the name "complex" and wants to learn more about it, they shouldn't be allowed to search "complex math" on wikipedia, they should instead search the first word on a different website and the second word here? Or alternatively, the user should just come into knowledge of more specific terms (complex analysis or complex number), presumably through extra research on some more accomodating website, and then search it here? How on earth would that be a good experience for a reader? Why would any of that be necessary or expected? BugGhost 🦗👻 09:11, 23 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. If we had articles on both the technical meaning and the colloquial meaning we could make a disambiguation page, or choose a primary topic with a hatnote. But we don't (Mathematics Made Difficult doesn't count), and we don't generally let the existence of a non-notable colloquial meaning get in the way of giving articles or redirects on technical topics their correct names. In technical mathematics, this can only mean the mathematics of complex numbers (unless maybe someone trying to be cute has used it for the mathematics of cell complexes), and complex number is the correct redirect target. —David Eppstein (talk) 08:29, 22 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    "giving articles or redirects on technical topics their correct names". Are you saying that "complex math(ematics)" is a "correct name" for "complex numbers"? ZFT (talk) 07:46, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per WP:RASTONISH (I couldn't really find somewhere more appropriate for such a vague term either). The plain meaning of this term is just difficult/technical/etc., not related to the complex numbers. A reasonable person looking for info on the complex numbers that already knows something about them will look up something like "complex numbers". A reasonable person looking for info about the topic that doesn't know anything about them will look for the term they found it referred to as, which will be something like the "complex numbers". The current target is misleading. 35.139.154.158 (talk) 15:06, 22 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    I really don't think it's astonishing for Complex math to redirect to the article on the well known mathematical study of complex numbers, I would think it would be astonishing if it went anywhere else. The "plain meaning" of something doesn't hold any weight for a redirect when there is an obvious specific topic that fits instead (see my Big apple vs "an apple that is big" example above). BugGhost 🦗👻 14:47, 23 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Complex number is certainly not "an obvious specific topic" for "complex math". On the opposite, I think that many (if not most) people searching for "complex math" do not know anything of complex numbers, since people using "math" instead of "mathematics" have generally a very low mathematical level and do not know complex numbers at all. Also, when searched, "complex math" is probably written as an altenative of "difficult math" or "advanced math". So, for there readers, redirecting to complex number goes against WP:ASTONISH. D.Lazard (talk) 15:54, 23 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    since people using "math" instead of "mathematics" have generally a very low mathematical level and do not know complex numbers at all - Is this a serious claim? Any source for that, or just a gut instinct insult? I've got a maths degree and wouldn't bat an eye at either math, maths or mathematics being used to describe it. Also, where I am from, complex numbers are taught to 14 year olds, who generally feel no elitist need to say "mathematics" all the time, but still have the ability to understand the topic. BugGhost 🦗👻 18:01, 23 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    I do have to say that I think reading anything into "math" vs. "mathematics" is inappropriate...regardless, this is an implausible, vague search topic, and if you really want to get into the weeds, who's to say that this hypothetical searcher isn't looking for Complex analysis instead? That's a whole ass branch whole-ass branch of math. And before you cry "disambiguate", no, just delete. 35.139.154.158 (talk) 19:45, 23 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Your "Big Apple" analogy fails completely for a couple reasons -- 1) it's a very well established nickname for the city in widespread use, as opposed to "complex mathematics", which is not, and 2) people would be very unlikely to search for the topic of a large apple, whereas a search for advanced (or higher, or upper level, etc etc) mathematics is a lot more reasonable. 35.139.154.158 (talk) 19:31, 23 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    I think the likelihood of someone searching "complicated math" is as about likely as someone searching "large apples", as both terms are too vague and ill defined to be articles. I genuinely don't understand the logic of saying this redirect should be deleted because it is allegedly ambiguous with a subjective, vague topic that doesn't (and won't ever) have an article. If it is ambigous with something that isn't at all suitable to be an article then there is no ambiguity at all, and the original target should remain. BugGhost 🦗👻 01:36, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    "Complex math" isn't a topic. It's a vague phrase that nobody uses to refer to the redirect target, and a plain reading suggests it's more likely to mean higher mathematics (while we don't have an article specifically about that, we very well could...most any university math degree curriculum contains something like a "transition to higher mathematics" course) than to mathematics about the complex numbers. If you really insist on the latter, again, why the complex numbers, and not complex analysis? Or are you suggesting that this is merely a couple keywords smushed together? If that's the case, we shouldn't be redirecting based on that, but even if we should, then also why not abstract cell complex, CW complex, chain complex, complex manifold, simplicial complex, etc. etc? 35.139.154.158 (talk) 03:04, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Re: "why not a bunch of other articles with the word complex in?" - Because they are clearly not the primary topic. Complex analysis is the study of functions that use complex numbers (extension of real analysis), and so not the introductory base article for the concept of complex numbers. The rest of the articles you listed are not serious suggestions - they are arbitrary articles you picked out of a hat that no one is suggesting, and are obviously more niche and very unlikely to be what the user is trying to find when searching "complex math".
    The study of complex numbers is not a niche topic - I feel some participants are confusing the topic with a some novelty number classification, like lucky numbers or happy numbers. Complex numbers are a hugely important pillar of modern mathematics and have usages that are both influential and applied. They underpin essential concepts in signal processing, computer graphics and quantum physics (examples linked), and dozens of other fields. It is undoubtedly the primary topic. If you need evidence of this, please see David Eppstein's vote above, as his view on this topic should be given some weight. BugGhost 🦗👻 11:33, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. The term "complex" in its technical sense is used with various nouns (complex number, complex plane, complex analysis, complex conjugate, etc.). The phrase "complex math" is not much of a stretch, so it's a plausible search term for this topic. As for the colloquial sense of "complex", I agree with User:Bugghost: what would a reader be looking for?   • Delete, disambiguate, or hatnote. Just because "complex" has a specific meaning within mathematics, doesn't mean that "complex math" should redirect there, due to the fact that there are other possible interpretations of the phrase; redirecting "complex math" to "complex numbers" implies that the latter is the only instance of, or is synonymous with, the former. Put another way, even though "complex math" (the subjective/vague meaning) doesn't/shouldn't have it's own article, but "complex numbers" does, the latter is (arguably) a subset of the former; having a term with multiple (potential) meanings pointing to only one of several seems inappropriate to me, because that leads to incorrect assumptions/implications. A redirect should take you to the topic you are looking for, not a subset of it; if there are multiple (potential) meanings/interpretations, then a disambiguation page is more appropriate, or at least a hatnote at the primary topic. ZFT (talk) 07:23, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Redirect to Complex#Mathematics. In the disambiguation subsection the reader can find related terms to it. Alexcalamaro (talk) 07:42, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    That seems much more reasonable. I do not agree with BugGhost's and Eppstein's reasoning; redirects should be as direct and straightforward as possible. Your proposal therefore seems like the best solution. ZFT (talk) 07:52, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    But none of those terms would ever be called "complex math". I've also trimmed that section down, as it was rife with WP:PTMs. I was conservative in my removal, but I still wound up removing several. The dab page is a bad target, and a bad target is worse than no target at all. 35.139.154.158 (talk) 07:58, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    If they would never be called that, then why are we having this discussion? ZFT (talk) 08:04, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    This is a fair enough compromise - I personally don't think it's necessary as complex numbers are the clear primary topic in my view, but this disambiguation is a far better choice than deleting. I'd be fine with this as an outcome. BugGhost 🦗👻 12:40, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Whilst removing unattributed content does prevent future harm, it does not resolve the underlying issue that when this content was in DuPage County, Illinois, its attribution was lacking. If the text was reused in another Wikipedia article or elsewhere on the Internet or in books, etc. whilst it was around, that presently remains a failure in attribution that is only worsened by the deletion of this redirect's history without recording it. USS Zhukov (NCC-62136)
[edit]
"Zhukov" is not mentioned at the target article, and this is a completely separate ship in-universe. This was redirected in 2006, apparently failing even that era's notability standards. It was pointed at a target that then got redirected into the article that was deleted at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of Star Trek Starfleet starships, but this redirect got pointed elsewhere somehow and didn't get deleted with that content. This can be safely deleted. Hog Farm Talk 04:02, 28 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Agree it can be deleted - the parenthetical registry number makes it an unlikely search term. If there's an inclination toward a more appropriate redirect direct, Data's Day fits the bill, as it's the first time this particulars ship appears on screen. Luxury homes
[edit]
Previous RfDs for this redirect and similar redirects:
Notwithstanding the lack of consensus on the closure of the last RfD of a group of redirects including this one, Luxury homes should have the same target as Luxury home per WP:PLURALPT ("the normal situation is that a plural redirects to its singular, or to wherever its singular redirects", so retarget it to Real estate. Redirects to category space are really not optimal for situations like this, especially when there's a singular version pointing somewhere else, and no reason to ignore the guideline.   • Delete. We're not censored and shouldn't encourage any misguided notion that we'll de-censor self-censored search terms. If something's citeably referred to in censored fashion, that's different. The play Shopping and Fucking was frequently referred to in the media as "Shopping and F***ing", for example (e.g.), and that would be a legitimate redirect title. I'm kind of surprised that Shopping and F***ing doesn't already exist, now that I've looked for it.  — Hex talk 16:14, 19 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep redirecting a redacted version to the non-censored version is pretty much the opposite of censorship. I did a new simple google search for "Nightb***h" and found that the Daily Mail has used it in two video posts and three articles, so it's very possible someone will search Wikipedia for that exact title. Thanks for merging those pages. I haven't deleted such a large number of pages at once before, so I didn't realize I needed to merge them. I'll be more careful next time. My reason for deletion was that if I search for a specific latitude, I'm more likely to want to know what's on that latitude, rather than being redirected to another article. I'm not very good at English, so I may not have been able to explain my thoughts well. For example, for latitudes 81°S to 89°S, I don't think I would want to be redirected to the same article every time I search for one. While I understand other perspectives, I still think having separate articles would be more user-friendly. But if everyone agrees to keep the redirects, I'm fine with that.--Psycho CSL (talk) 02:10, 28 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
After further thought, the more important point is that the Antarctica article doesn't actually cover information about those latitudes.--Psycho CSL (talk) 02:21, 28 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete all. 1) Wikipedia is not an atlas. While we may have articles about countries and things that you do find in an atlas, it's not meant to be a database dump of what countries cross what arbitrary lines of latitude/longitude. There's nothing inherently interesting about breaking up by integer values of degrees; this is a task more suited to a program that has geographic data and can convert any such line of longitude or latitude into such a list automatically. 2) Even if you want these for completeness, the ones we do have are part of a series, and these are not, so WP:REDYES applies. We shouldn't have these redirects to cover up the fact that these parts of the series don't exist. Furthermore, there's absolutely no reason why the series has to be complete at all. 35.139.154.158 (talk) 18:09, 28 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Also, I forgot to add that these tend to be ambiguous. Why Arctic ocean and not Arctic ice sheet or simply Arctic? Similar concerns exist in the south. 35.139.154.158 (talk) 18:16, 28 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Comment The lines of latitude and longitude articles have been taken to AFD several times before and they've always been kept. This Redirects for Discussion page is not the appropriate place to discuss them, but feel free to raise them at AFD yet again if you must. In any case, there is nothing in WP:NOT that mentions atlases, and of course there are thousands of articles about geographical locations.
Regarding your comments about the Arctic ice sheet, this is not fixed in place, and (especially with the future effects of global warming) parts of the parallels might go over open ocean, thereby making a redirect to Arctic ice sheet not necessarily correct. The ice sheets are in the Arctic Ocean, so redirects to Arctic Ocean will always be correct, whether the parallels pass over ice or open water. I'm not sure what "similar concerns exist in the south" really means – these parallels are entirely on the continent of Antarctica. A redirect to Antarctica is therefore more precise than a link to Antarctic which covers seas that these parallels don't pass through. Bazonka (talk) 21:59, 28 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The only incoming link is clearly intended to be to the Rutherglen Reformer, so my preferred action is to retarget to the newspaper. However, a dab page between Calvin, Luther, and the newspaper is also possible. Tevildo (talk) 19:50, 26 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep - Google disagrees, it seems lots of people use exactly this initialism. Some use it in all lowercase, some all uppercase, and some with the mixed case of TRaFoZSatSFM, but I'm seeing significantly more hits than I expected when I searched for it. Looks like a useful redirect for navigational aid-- the title is so long people naturally want to shorten it. Howdunnit
[edit]
admittedly on the weak side of noms, but whatever. a "whodunit" is a mystery story where the mystery is the criminal. a "howcatchem" (or the longer name used in the target i guess) makes catching the very known criminal the mystery. a "howdunit" is somewhere in between, referring to how the do was did. it can overlap with any amount of whodunit and howcatchem. is death note a howdunit? cogsan (nag me) (stalk me) 12:10, 16 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
should also mention that there's a section on howdunits in whodunnit, but it's entirely unsourced and may be erroneously treating them as synonyms cogsan (nag me) (stalk me) 12:12, 16 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak Keep - Searching google shows at least one article that directly equates these as synonyms, even though if you just look at the word, it doesn't seem to be. [8] "Then there's the howdunnit, {...} These can be referred to as an inverse detective novel". I agree with cogsan that I wouldn't use this word this way, but there we go... a little scanning on social media shows that a lot of people use "howdunnit" and "howcatchem" interchangeably, which would make this the correct target. I'm not fully confident about this one though. Fieari (talk) 03:21, 17 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    More searching reveals more sources using "howdunnit" as a synonymn for "howcatchem" or the inverted detective story... including a plethora of hits on google scholar. So I'm removing the weak portion of my !vote. This synonym should probably be explicitly added to the article as well, given how many sources pop up. Here's just one as an example: [9], but the google scholar hits go on for pages and pages of results (some of which define it in the paper, others just use the word). If it is the skater, then the current target is the cohesive target, since that's the only one where the skater finished on the podium, so the only prominent finish for the skater. But we have 2 historical figures with this name, a provincial governor and a rebel general, thus making this a good page to make a disambiguation page.     even if I did read those three films articles in my point of view or someone else's point of view, they'd be like "Who the hell is Leo?", and again, I'm not a Mothra expert, I'm only a Godzilla expert.
    If those who don't know what this IP is referring to, I'll mention this quote stated in a past discussion stated by @121.45.246.200 Mothra Leo is a fan name and its simply a rumor, besides if its a rebirth trilogy, the Mothra should be named "MOTHRA", not Leo, otherwise Toho should've changed the names of the trilogy to "Birth of Mothra Leo".
    Soft redirects to Wiktionary are almost always harmful. They pollute the search dropdown box and impede searching within Wikipedia, and the target offers no encyclopedic content, despite the fact that WP is an encyclopedia, and not a dictionary. A plain search will still offer a link to Wiktionary for a term that has an entry there, so there's really nothing lost by getting rid of this. Soft redirects also produce blue links instead of red, leading a reader to think there might be more information at the target, when there is in fact none. 35.139.154.158 (talk) 17:25, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Disambiguate the Roman colonial empire of the Roman Republic; the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire; the post-Republic East+West Roman Empire. Contrasts with the New Roman Empire. This is a succession of the evolution of the Roman Empire, from colonial empire adjunct to a republic, to the conversion of the republic into rule by Caesars, to the collapse of the west and the eastern rump Roman Empire being called the Byzantine Empire by Western European scholarship (though politically, it is the same entity as that before the collapse of the western portion) -- 65.92.246.77 (talk) 04:07, 14 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Leave as is. It seems obvious to me that this phrase is used to contrast the original Roman Empire with the Byzantine Empire or other states claiming to be successors to the Roman Empire. It is not an especially common phrase, and does not seem to have a more specific meaning in academic use, such as the empire of the Roman Republic, the Principate, or the Dominate. Thus "Roman Empire" is the best target. P Aculeius (talk) 16:13, 14 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Whether here or on my talk page, either is fine :) Hey man im josh (talk) 18:43, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    @Hey man im josh: I've always interpretted the guideline to be that crosspace redirs are generally discouraged. but I see that category redirects are exempt from WP:CSD R2. I would recommend creating the list (with sourcing), if notable, instead of a redirect. Otherwise, I've never thought much about appropriate exceptions. —Bagumba (talk) 05:16, 26 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    AFAICT there are mixed opinions on XNRs to categories, but they lean anti-. I tend to view categories as reader-facing so I think this type of redirect can be the best option at times. J947edits 06:07, 26 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Regardless of its XNR status, this redirect isn't great at the minute because as far as I can tell the category does not include ABA-winning players. So I'm thus not sure why these redirects were created. List of ABA champions lists the teams, not the players. Delete. J947edits 04:56, 28 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Yes, even if one was not opposed in principle to x-namespace, a reader landing here cannot readily tell an NBA player from an ABA one, rendering the redirect unhelpful. —Bagumba (talk) 12:39, 28 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Weak keep I know nowhere near enough about Pokémon to make a justified statement, but according to Bulbapedia, Victini is #0494 so this seems like a pretty cut and dry redirect. User:Someone-123-321 (I contribute, Talk page so SineBot will shut up) 00:47, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
that's in the national pokédex. the unova pokédex had a whole plot point about victini specifically being #0 and how that was symbolic of... something. unown syndrome strikes again, as we still have no idea what it is consarn (formerly cogsan) 11:01, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The best hypothesis I know about this is that Victini is first so that it would reduce how many blank Pokedex entries you would get upon receiving it. --Super Goku V (talk) 11:21, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Normally we wouldn't use Bulbapedia, but see the Unova Pokédex where it is listed as #000 in the 2010 games, Black and White. For an attempt at a reliable source, see GamesRadar+. --Super Goku V (talk) 11:13, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Snou Strait
[edit]
This was created as the result of this deletion discussion but the problem remains that I found no evidence that anyone uses this transliteration of the supposed Russian, if only because it's supposedly named after a Mr. Snow, whose name was therefore supposedly transliterated into Russian. We really need to avoid making up fake English names for things through our own transliterations, so this redirect needs to go. Mangoe (talk) 13:04, 16 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep Regardless of the validity of this spelling, an article existed at this title from 2006 until last week. Since then, the spelling has been picked up by several travel sites in both Russian ([10]) and English ([11]) according to my Google searches. I think keeping is warranted given this error has now been in circulation for some time. - Presidentman talk · contribs (Talkback) 13:31, 16 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the other way to look at it is that some writer here decided to make up his own transliteration which has enjoyed some extremely limited dissemination by unwary WP copiers. And therefore we should suppress that by refusing to continue to amplify this by deleting the redirect. One could argue that the correct English spelling should be the English name that the Russian is itself transliterating in the firest place, but the fact seems to remain that we don't have a legitimate authority for this. Mangoe (talk) 14:13, 23 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Chick-Fila
[edit]
Admittedly a pretty weak nom due to the capitalization and the dash, but couldn't it also be possible that a learner who doesn't natively speak english would also be looking for the chicken tenders article (as to which chick fillet isn't a redirect to but also wouldn't mind it existing) User:Someone-123-321 (I contribute, Talk page so SineBot will shut up) 10:01, 23 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Pregnant man
[edit]
Which is right? LIrala (talk) 17:31, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'd say that both should link to the same place and that should be Transgender pregnancy. The section in Male pregnancy deals with two largely theoretical matters before very briefly getting on to things that actually exist in the real world. It doesn't even link to Transgender pregnancy, which is the most likely topic that the reader is actually looking for. Transgender pregnancy is much more likely to give the reader what they want and expect. I guess the other target might be acceptable if that section was substantially improved and included a link to Transgender pregnancy but, as it stands, the first redirect sends readers off to a poorly written section that doesn't give them what they are most likely looking for. This is likely to confuse and frustrate them. --DanielRigal (talk) 20:10, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    1. doesn't directly refer to his second presidency as a sequel. rather, it seems to be about his wacky hijinks in the not burning the world department
    2. i guess "the trump sequel" is close enough
    3. evidently refers to it as a sequel as a joke, but it's probably good enough
    4. seems to refer to everything about the presidency and how people are handling it, except what the annoying orange will actually do. also evidently refers to those effects as a sequel as a joke, but it probably works
    5. "hollywood's trump resistance: the sequel" is not the same as "trump: the sequel"
    6. oh, it's an episode of a tv program. hate that that's how i finally pieced it together, but it's about that episode, and not necessarily the presidency
I also disagree that RS for the specific term is required. A ghost town is an abandoned settlement, which can be abandoned for natural disasters. NotAGenious (talk) 17:53, 22 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Jewish pogrom in Amsterdam
[edit]
The Holocaust in the Netherlands, where actual pogroms happened, is a better target than a WP:RECENT football hooligan clash. मल्ल (talk) 16:08, 8 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete "Pogrom" is not an established or a widely used term, looking at the coverage of this incident WP:RNEUTRAL. Retarget to the suggested article is also fine. — hako9 (talk) 20:31, 8 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Redirect as suggested, but I suggest adding a for hatnote (not a redirect hatnote, for language reasons) to that target. It is supposedly being used in prominent sources (and probably social media but I'm not on Twitter) to refer to the recent ethnic hooliganism, but I agree that it's inappropriate and insensitive to refer to this as a pogrom when actual state-sanctioned pogroms actually happened here. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 21:04, 8 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Speedy Keep - Redirects are navigation aids. With the target article saying that the President of Israel characterized the attack as a pogrom, that's sufficient to make it a reasonable search term. The Mountain of Eden (talk) 00:06, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    The purpose of the redirects is covered in WP:RPURPOSE. The President of Turkey characterized the president of Israel as a "genocidal murderer". Is that sufficient to make it a reasonable search term, and therefore, a redirect? M.Bitton (talk) 01:28, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Your analogy doesn't apply. Per WP:BLP, it would be inappropriate to put into the biographical article on the President of Israel the personal attacks that some other world leader made (although it would be appropriate to say that he has been criticized). Likewise, we do not put into biographical articles all the insulting "nicknames" that Trump has given all his political opponents.
    In the case of this redirect in question, the target article specifically has the term "pogrom" in the article, and there are no WP:BLP concerns.
    It's somewhat bewildering that this is not obvious, and I need to explain it. The Mountain of Eden (talk) 06:37, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    It's somewhat bewildering that you missed the obvious point: the president of Israel is not a reliable source for such a statement. His irrelevant opinion can be attributed to him, but that's about it. M.Bitton (talk) 14:31, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    WP:RS does not apply to redirects. The question about redirects is whether it's a plausible search term. The fact that the President of Israel called it a Pogrom, and it's in the article, makes it a plausible search term. The Mountain of Eden (talk) 20:35, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Preferably delete, the usage of pogrom seems to be isolated to biased sources and should be avoided for obvious WP:NPOV concerns. I think a retarget to The Holocaust in the Netherlands would only work if it is retarged to something specific on that page. Esolo5002 (talk) 08:42, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong keep. What happened yesterday in Amsterdam was characterized by reliable sources as a pogrom. This is stated in the lede of the target. What happened in the Netherlands during the Holocaust was mass-murder of Jews, but not a pogrom or a sequence of pogroms. In fact, that article does not mention pogroms and never uses the word.--Ymblanter (talk) 09:19, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Have any of the WP:RSP described this as a pogrom in their own voice? — hako9 (talk) 11:41, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget to The Holocaust in the Netherlands or delete.
When I was a fresh-faced disambiguator, I came across an ambiguous link to a place in modern Belarus. I identified it.
The very next problem was identical. I solved that too.
The third one was the same, and I solved it as well.
At that point, I took a break, because for some reason I was unable to focus properly and was swearing uncontrollably. One of those three places, obliterated in the early 1940s, is commemorated by an engraved stone in the ground. The other two are not.
Calling the recent incident in Amsterdam a "pogrom" is an insult to all those who were victims of actual pogroms. FWIW, I have no Jewish heritage. Narky Blert (talk) 15:41, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Speedy and Strong Keep - What happened in Amsterdam was horrific and it needs to be reflected as such. It has been described as a pogram and that's because it was one. MaskedSinger (talk) 19:15, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    I'm going to try to say this as charitably as possible, but as someone whose relatives have had to flee actual pogroms during WW2, I feel I do need to say it:
    I find this comparison, made by heads of state or politicians and now defended by you, incredibly insensitive, deeply upsetting, and bordering, itself, on antisemitism, given how profoundly, by association, it minimizes the horrors of anti-Jewish pogroms and relativizes the atrocities of those that carried out pogroms. Especially now that it's become increasingly apparent the Israeli fans engaged in behavior that could itself, at best, be described as monstrous bigotry and cheers for ethnic cleansing.
    Either way, while I wanted to share how offensive I think this comparison actually is, I'm aware my feelings on the subject matter little. The only question that should be considered here is: per RNEUTRAL, is this term one that's been established by reliable sources to have due weight and therefore meets the criteria for NPOV redirects? I don't have an answer to that myself as I haven't looked at the proportion of sources that use the term, but I think that's what should be focused on here. LaughingManiac (talk) 14:17, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    @LaughingManiac How is calling it a pogrom bordering on antisemitism? MaskedSinger (talk) 14:56, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    I said what I said and have laid out my reasons for saying it already. Take it or leave it at that. LaughingManiac (talk) 15:07, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep A very quick Google search demonstrates that the term “Amsterdam pogrom” and “pogrom in Amsterdam” are being widely used to describe the article topic. This strikes me a reasonable search term; I personally used the redirect to initially find the article. Spirit of Eagle (talk) 20:44, 9 November 2024 (UTC) EDIT: under wikipedia:RNEUTRAL we are permitted to use non-neutral redirect titles and are in fact given extra leeway because redirects are less visible to readers. Given that the the term has been frequently used in reliable sources and given that it is a reasonable search term for readers to utilize, I really do not see a justification to delete. Spirit of Eagle (talk) 23:07, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget or just delete - the reliable sources used in the article which I spot-checked do not describe this event as a pogrom; at most they quote Israeli officials doing so. Hatman31 (he/him · talk · contribs) 02:41, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete The sources are not describing this as a pogrom. Netanyahu is not a reliable source for what this article should be called. Parabolist (talk) 11:00, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The holocaust article also has no redirects or incoming links from articles having "pogrom' in the title. If a president naming a recent incident as a pogrom, is irrelevant opinion, a group of Wikipedia editors characterizing the Holocaust in the Netherlands as comprising of a pogrom, is not any less. The vast majority of these sources are not calling it a pogrom in their own voice and are simply quoting people describing the event as such, or just mention it in the headline (WP:HEADLINES). The only sources that are asserting it was a pogrom are 6: Townhall (WP:MREL), Legal insurrection (not a RS, looks like a glorified blog), Israel National News (not a RS, it's an Israeli Zionist media network), NYSun (a conservative news website known for dishonest reporting), a blog from ToI (WP:NEWSBLOG) and finally, and unsurprisingly, Jpost (not precisely known for fact checking and currently under discussion re: their reliability). - Ïvana (talk) 02:10, 28 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wiktionary or their equivalent -gender articles? LIrala (talk) 17:52, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not really seeing the point of those redirects but redirecting to Wiktionary seems unlikely to be helpful. It seems like they should both link to the articles but maybe I'm missing the point here? --DanielRigal (talk) 23:50, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@DanielRigal The point of the redirects? The terms are more used academically in journals or activist writing in English, and are the literal translations of the terms French Wikipedia uses in the mainspace titles, probably because of WP:NOUN policies plus the terms being more formal in French. Cisidentity, specifically, seems to be a protologism. I guess people redirect them to Wiktionary because the terms are not mentioned in the main articles. Though recently some egregious groups started using them to mean "cisid" and "transid". LIrala (talk) 04:09, 13 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe they should be mentioned in the main articles then? I'm not sure to what extent French terminology should guide us but if redirecting to Wiktionary makes more sense for reasons that I'm not getting then that's fine. I do think that both should do the same thing though. It's confusing if parallel terms are treated differently. --DanielRigal (talk) 04:19, 13 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You can also check fr:cisidentité and fr:transidentité. Do you think it fits transgender terminology section?
And what about the redirect non-cisgender, now that gender modality exists. LIrala (talk) 05:50, 28 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think that transidentity should redirect to Transgender to reflect the cisidentity redirect. The first source you linked is not relevant because it is an economics source. The other two seem like they are in use only to provide a word that is closer to the French studies' meanings than other English words; they is no evidence that either word is more an artifact of translation than anything else. Thus, I think we should link to the respective articles. If there is some source out there that describes them in much greater depth, or if more sources are published describing/using them, then, by all means, we should create a new article from a redirect, as I did in Gender modality.
You could stand to create a separate RfD on non-cisgender.
I also think that, if we do end up choosing to write about the terms, then we could have a broader gender terminology article, perhaps including Gender modality and the transgender terminology section. JuxtaposedJacob (talk) | :) | he/him | 15:31, 28 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Legends Drum and Bugle Corps
[edit]
Does not appear at target article. Bgsu98 (Talk) 09:31, 7 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: I removed it from the target page since it no longer fits the criteria of the list (i.e., a multiple-time finalist in the World Class division). However, I would not be opposed to keeping it purely to preserve the page history. Why? I Ask (talk) 09:38, 7 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • Hold on... the criteria of the list reads list of defunct Drum Corps International member corps, particularly those that have been finalists multiple times. The Legends Drum and Bugle Corps seems to satisfy that. Am I missing something? Andrewa (talk) 22:07, 14 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
      They have not been finalists overall, only in the lower division (which most make since it is smaller). The only time a lower-division corps has made finals was the Magic of Orlando in 2002. Why? I Ask (talk) 00:03, 15 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hallelujah night
[edit]
Not mentioned at target, but is a term used in a least one book (Guadalcanal: The Definitive Account). However, Google results are all associated with a Christian alternative to Halloween, and the only use of the term on enwiki is in a reference at Halloween. Not sure what's best here, but the status quo is likely astonishing to at least some searchers. Mdewman6 (talk) 23:42, 29 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Tradiční Lovecký salám
[edit]
lovecký salám (hunting salami, apparently) is mentioned in the article, but not necessarily its "traditional" variant. has incoming links, but their classification as traditional seems to be unsourced and not necessarily correct cogsan (nag me) (stalk me) 12:43, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
should mention that lovecký salám already exists, so the links could easily be fixed, if any fixing needs to be done cogsan (nag me) (stalk me) 12:46, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Lovecký salám was applied for as a EU Traditional Speciality Guaranteed-product (TSG). That means that -in order to use the name- all products in the EU have to be produced according to the specs provided in the application. following opposition, the name Tradiční Lovecký salám was accepted as a TSG (see here). That means that one can use the name Lovecký salám without regards to what the product looks like, but Tradiční Lovecký salám is subject to the characteristics in the description. The name is therefore worth a redirect as people may be interested and this is the closest page we can offer. Having said that, the current characterisation of Lovecký salám as a TSG i incorrect; and I will change that. An alternative is redirecting to List of traditional specialities guaranteed by country, but for me that feels too generic... L.tak (talk) 09:29, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Weak delete Unlike what some others are saying, I can relatively plausibly see someone accidentally transposing the I and A keys together. However, this is literally the first page you see when you open up Wikipedia we're talking about here, so people manually going to the Main Page is irrelevant here.   • Keep per pageviews (so per nom, I suppose). That the target receives a high number of views doesn't change anything. This also seems unambiguous as a search term. I don't know what someone searching this could be looking for other than the main page; I'm not seeing any people called "Mian Page" that we cover. – Michael Aurel (talk) 11:01, 12 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Trump nominations for independent agencies
These have significant pre-merge edit history for Political appointments of the first Trump administration, but this title does not differentiate between first or second term. Not sure whether to redirect it to 1st term article or to the disambiguation page. Should we move it to a title mentioning "first presidency" without leaving a redirect? Ra'ad 1
[edit]
The more I research this redirect, the more confused I get. For starters, this redirect formerly targeted the article that is currently at Fajr-3 (artillery rocket), and did for the past six years. However, before that, this redirect targeted the article which it currently targets. However, to throw some more confusion into the mix, another similarly-titled article, Raad-1, exists. I may have figured out a better plan for what to do with this redirect by now if it were not for its incoming links; I am not clear what subject these links are meant to refer to. I'm thinking disambiguate is the way to go here, but I'm incredibly unclear what the base title should be for such a disambiguation page. Steel1943 (talk) 00:41, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Raad already exists as a disambiguation and there really isn't any suitable target for the exact title. Alternatively, retarget to Raad since that's the actual disambiguation. Hatnote
[edit]
Delete, crossnamespace redirect from (article) to project page. It appears that the word "hatnote" was invented specifically for Wikipedia, there are no other stuff with that word and the internet underlined that word as a misspelling. Cyber the tiger (talk) 14:41, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete WP:XNR redirect into the pipeworking. Non-readership content. -- 65.92.246.77 (talk) 15:15, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep per... well... nom. Indeed the word "hatnote" was invented specifically for Wikipedia and there are no other stuff with that word. Since I find it likely that new editors will wonder what the uses of them are, there isn't an encyclopedic target we have for this, and this redirect is unambiguous, I'm sure it's fine. mwwv converseedits 16:19, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    A reader will never encounter the word hatnote normally, they will just see hatnotes, without knowing what Wikipedia calls the internally. Just as any part of the internals of Wikipedia are not usually known by the readership, nor need to be known by the readership. If they wantt to find out, then they will probably be part of the contributor editorship, which is not what redirects in articlespace are for. WP:HATNOTE already exists for us, the editorship. -- 65.92.246.77 (talk) 16:38, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Fair enough. However, I do feel pageviews should be taken into account here, given that it's averaging around 2 per day. Whether it's bored experienced editors, the readers/newbies being curious, or from the multiple pages it's linked to is beyond me, but the redirect is clearly seeing some use (would also like to note that this is linked in Hat (disambiguation), which has had 206 views in the past 30 days). I must also note that this XNR has been around since 2008. mwwv converseedits 22:38, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep, helpful, apparently unambiguous. —Kusma (talk) 17:47, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • This was RfDed 3 times before, most recently at Wikipedia:Redirects_for_discussion/Log/2023_September_17#Hatnote. I supported deletion in the last two of those, and nothing I've seen since has changed my position, so delete * Pppery * it has begun... 18:44, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Retarget to Listen to Wikipedia with hatnote is unironically the best solution here in my opinion. Listen to Wikipedia is not at all an obscure article, receiving 500 pageviews a month, so the reader looking for that with this search term is plausible. An injoke-y hatnote about hatnotes is more acceptable when, as previously identified, LtW is firmly inside the wikirealm. Second choice disambiguate. And bundle in Hat note and Hatnotes on the relist, please. J947edits 00:42, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Suggested target no longer mentions it, as I've removed it as unsourced (not just unsourced, but none of the sources actually refer to it with this name). 35.139.154.158 (talk) 07:56, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Thanks. It's certainly not 100% unambiguous, but with that clarification it's near enough, so keep (with the current hatnotes to headnote and hat notation). J947edits 00:27, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Soft redirect to wikt:hatnote. Reader-focused target most related to what previous discussions considered the primary use. This has been brought to discussion several times now and a salty soft-redirect may also be warranted as a cost-saving measure. Editors should know to use namespaces (like WP:, HELP:, etc.) for linking or searches. Second preference is retargeting to Listen to Wikipedia per above and previous talks. ― Synpath 02:55, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. No reason to delete 100% unambiguous XNRs. Mach61 00:24, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep - My history will show I usually strongly dislike WP:XNRs, but this one really is completely unambiguously not associated with anything but us, and so our internal pages actually provide the same kind of information that someone would be looking for in mainspace in this case. So I think this is a valid exception to the general rule. Fieari (talk) 03:37, 17 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. Useful and unambiguous. I'm not seeing any strong reasons for deleting this redirect. CycloneYoris talk! 09:06, 17 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep per mwwv, J947 and Fieari. Disagree that this Wikipedia term is non-readership content. Search for this term in article namespace and you will find several hits, mainly category Articles with hatnote templates targeting a nonexistent page, category Articles with redirect hatnotes impacted by RfD. Readers use the search functionality and could encounter meta terms such as these. Readers could stumble upon articles that are nominated for deletion, such as Droideka (disambiguation), where the rationale for WP:ONEOTHER mentions "hatnote", although fair to say it is the PRODder's (editor not reader) jargon which is exposed to the reader. April 31
[edit]
The only reasoning for this appears to be "Java (specifically the java.util.Calendar class) allows dates such as February 0 (= January 31) and April 31 (= March 1)." The problem is that that particular class in Java seems to accept any integer for the date. I tested "April 366" which showed up as March 31 of the next year. The internet does say that there is a reference to "April 31" in the The Long Walk by Stephen King, but it is purposely supposed to be a fictional date, even within that universe. -MPGuy2824 (talk) 06:47, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
2024 AP Poll
[edit]
Seems ambigous but I'm not totally sure what would be a better target. Could refer to 2024–25 NCAA Division I men's basketball rankings, 2023–24 NCAA Division I men's basketball rankings, 2023–24 NCAA Division I women's basketball rankings, 2024–25 NCAA Division I women's basketball rankings. But college football is the only one that only uses 2024. Esolo5002 (talk) 04:23, 27 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The drafted page could be a WP:SIA under a title like 2024 NCAA Division I rankings, and 2024 AP poll could be an R from avoided double redirect to it. Jay 💬 07:47, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Cilla Single
[edit]
Can't find where Ben Frank ever used this as a pseudonym. TeapotsOfDoom (talk) 00:55, 20 November 2024 (UTC) TeapotsOfDoom (talk · contribs) is a confirmed sock puppet of Okmrman (talk · contribs). [reply]
  • Comment surprisingly (to me) this seems to be attested despite very limited online hits: Franklin, Benjamin; Smyth, Albert H. (1905). The writings of Benjamin Franklin. New York, London: Macmillan Co.; Macmillan & Co. OCLC 1158474884. Retrieved 2024-11-28. (on page 186). I'm very unsure how someone would end up searching for this term without knowing it was a pseudonym of Franklin's however.
  • This may be added to the target at the "Success as an author" section where it says He frequently wrote under pseudonyms. If we have 3 or 4 names, Cilla Single can be mentioned alongwith them. Jay 💬 06:21, 4 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete unless someone takes the initiative to add a mention themselves. * Pppery * it has begun... 21:25, 25 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Looks like Cilla Single is a misspelling for Celia Single to me. J947edits 21:02, 28 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
