Okay, the use of "classical" is highly problematic, maybe for all of the 20th century, definitely for the late-20th century. Why not change this to "composers"? Another option would be "art music" composers. What confuses me is the fact that there isn't a category for 20th century avant-garde composers and 20th-century popular music composers and 20th-century postmodern composers and 20th-century borderline composers. If the goal is to create a large, over-arching category (a very good goal), I think "classical" should be removed. There are several composers on this list who do not belong in the larger category of "20th-century composers" but not "20th-century classical composers."
Does anyone have a suggestion for a talk page where this kind of issue is hashed out? I've done some exploring, but have not found anything about any kind of art (performance or plastic). --Cpomeara 21:46, 27 Oct 2004 (UTC)
There is quite some talk about the term "classical music" vs. "art music" and more recently "Western classical music" here: [1] --- Utis 16:04, 28 Oct 2004 (UTC)
- First you should check the definition of "classical music". Currently "popular composers" may fit either at Category:Songwriters or Category:Composers. See also: Wikipedia:Categorization of people and more discussion regarding "classical vs art" at Category talk:Musical compositions. Hyacinth 18:58, 28 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Thanks for the pointers. I don't know why I didn't think of "classical music." --Cpomeara 21:15, 5 Nov 2004 (UTC)
I believe a composer names ABOU-BAKR KHAIRAT, born in 1910, should be included in the 20th Century list of composers. I have a recording of his Piano Concerto in c, Op.#10..a lovely work, on a par with Taneyev and the like. Desputandem 21:56, 4 February 2007 (UTC)
American C20 composers
[edit]Is there category for American 20th Century composers of concert-hall, recital and church music? If so, I haven't found it. I want to categorize my entry for American composer, Gregory Short, who lived in the northwest. Thank you in advance for your time. ~Jim
